Portugal Golden Visa: Everything You Need to Know

With its sunny coastline, laid-back lifestyle, and nice people, Portugal is a destination many people dream of. If you are not a citizen of an EU country, you may be unsure how to stay in the country long-term.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://www.movingto.io/pt/portugal-golden-visa

Would you recommend a Portugal Golden Visa over a Spanish Golden Visa? I’m particularly interested in the healthcare options.

It depends on what’s important to you.

The Spanish healthcare system is much much better than Portugal’s, however, it’s also more difficult to get access to.

Even with a Golden Visa in Spain, you don’t necessarily get access to their public healthcare system, whereas in Portugal, you do.

The requirements for the Spanish Golden Visa are also much more stringent. The cost of obtaining one is far higher and the tax benefits of Portugal are far superior to that of Spain’s.

All-in-all, the Portuguese Golden Visa is much better, almost across the board.

After doing a lot of research, it was very clear to me that the Portugal Golden visa was much better than the Spanish one. I personally think Spain is a nicer place to live than Portugal but Portugal has way more benefits for expats at the moment.

If you want quality of life, I would personally choose Spain but if you want the tax benefits, then Portugal all the way.
